Is Renting or Buying Better?

Many years ago, the American dream was to own a house. COVID helped changed that. Many people who now have the option of working from home. They do not want to be tied down to one house and one neighborhood for the rest of their life.

Renting has several advantages over buying a house:

Renters have no maintenance cost or large repair bills when a heater goes out or the roof springs a leak.

Renters only need a small capital outlay for a security deposit vs tens of thousands of dollars for a down payment.

Renters have the flexibility over where they live and for how long.

Renters will not lose tens of thousands of dollars should the housing market go down, thus holding them captive in an investment they are under water on.

Renters have lower insurance costs.

Renters have predictable monthly costs vs a house that will have repairs and increases in taxes every year.

With Renting, you can afford to live in a bigger more luxurious house than you could by buy.

Investing your money in a home, has historically proven to make less than other investment vehicles.
